Pippa Rossi, some remarks on Adriaen Pietersz. van de Venne

As an artist making illustrations for coloring books I have an interest in the illustration throughout time. In the pipparossi.com blog we will explore some illustrations from the past. Each post will describe a different artwork.

Today we exhibit Adriaen Pietersz. van de Venne, a Dutch Golden Age painter living from 1589 till 1662. He is an artist of genre paintings, allegories, book illustrator and designer.

It Takes Strong Legs to Carry Luxury

paper, h 501mm × w 409mm.

Being short of money may be unpleasant, but having too much of it causes its own problems. This drawing is a literal illustration of an Old Dutch saying, which translates as: ‘It takes strong legs to carry luxury’. Moral strength is needed to be able to support the burden of worldly riches.
